ABDA launches 2D code project
Berlin - In the fight against counterfeit medicines, German pharmacies are starting a pilot project for the authentication of medicine packets. According to ABDA, a system of the firm Aegate is to be employed, which is also used in Belgium. Besides numerous pharmacies, around 15 pharmaceutical manufacturers and the wholesale segment are also to be involved in the pilot project.
For the authentication system, a 2D code will be printed or stuck on the folding box by the manufacturer or wholesaler. The code also contains the central pharmaceutical number, batch number and expiry date. In addition, the data provider ABDATA can import current information such as recalls into the software of the pharmacies. When dispensing the pack, the pharmacy authenticates the medication by scan it and accessing the Aegate database. At no point in this process are patient-specific data saved, according to ABDA.
